Excursions

We want your time at Nong Khai to be an unforgettable experience, so Vacations To Teach organizes as many excursions as possible for you to enjoy all that Nong Khai and the surrounding provinces have to offer. Many attractions are a short drive away, although some may involve an overnight stay. All transport is free apart from motorcycle hire.

As Volunteer Teacher you too will have fun.

King Cobra Village

Kok Sa-nga Village is an extraordinary village in Khon Kaen Province - every house has a pet King Cobra! The residents of this village earn a living by catching and breeding King Cobras, an extremely dangerous snake that can grow up to 5 meters in length. The Wildlife Fund of Thailand has initiated this breeding and conservation program, allowing the snakes to live in their natural habitat. Shows are held daily where you can watch the locals perform dances and mock fights with the snakes. More info: King Cobra Village.

Phu Tok

Phu Tok, which means lonely mountain, is a sandstone range located about 170km from Nong Khai city. It is a meditation centre where Buddhists go to enjoy the tranquility and learn about Buddha's teachings. It is a very steep mountain which consists of seven separate levels connected by wooden ladders, bridges and walkways. On your climb you will discover caves, temples, Buddhist retreats, wildlife, and fantastic views. The higher you go the more breathtaking it gets and some parts are not for the fainthearted! In the surrounding countryside there are also waterfalls and nature reserves which we will visit.

Bung Khong Long

Bordering Laos and located 240km east of Nong Khai are the wetlands of Bung Khong Long, a vast area home to many species of wildlife and aquatic plants. It is a popular conservation area for birdwatchers and nature lovers, with nature trails set up to study the 66 fish species, 67 bird species, 10 reptile species, 6 amphibian species, and 23 species of aquatic plants found in the area. We stay overnight here and you can either camp out or rent a bungalow. Kayaking is also available and offers a great way to explore the wetlands.

Motorcycle Rides

A great way to explore the province is by motorcycle. A regular ride by some of the Vacation To Teach staff is the Nong Khai to Sangkhom route, which follows the Mekong River through some stunning scenery. Either hire your own bike, around 200 baht a day, or jump on the back of someone else's and enjoy the ride! In the evening we stay at guesthouses right on the river, where locals proudly display pictures of the giant Mekong catfish often found in the area.

Festivals

There are many festivals and special events that take place throughout the year. See more on the Thai Festival page.
