Volunteer work

   When you first arrive in Nong Khai you will receive an induction course on teaching methods, classroom management and Thai classroom culture.

   At the beginning of the teaching placement, the volunteers are not expected to be giving lessons but rather assisting the Thai teachers with the activities. Thai school children spend a lot of time learning grammar, reading, and writing but very little time speaking. The children generally lack confidence in speaking and as a volunteer your role will be to lead conversations, encourage the students to speak, bring realism to role-play activities, provide a model for correct pronunciation and help correct common errors.

   At a later stage you may be expected to teach the lessons on your own and this will involve lesson plans and material preparation. Do not worry if you don't have any prior teaching experience: Vacations To Teach staff, with more than 10 years of teaching English as a foreign language, are always available to help you.

   English camps are held during the school vacations and your role will be to help run all the activities: songs, games, plays, sports, etc. If you can play a musical instrument, bring it along for the campfire singsongs!

   Your time in Nong Khai is not restricted just to teaching English. Why not stick a rounders bat in your bag and introduce a new sport to Thailand? Do you have any special computer skills? Could you direct a drama? What you can give to the children is only limited by your imagination.
